About the project

The HFL Transcriptional Fluency Project supports teachers to develop the knowledge, skills and approaches needed to accelerate progress for lower-attaining writers. Using diagnostic assessment, structured dictation and guided group teaching, participants will learn how to identify specific barriers to writing and provide precise teaching that meets pupils' needs. As an in-class intervention, the project enables teachers to work directly with pupils within their everyday classroom context. Accompanied by a suite of resources and ongoing adviser support, the programme builds teachers' understanding of transcriptional fluency and its role in successful writing. Pupils benefit from focused teaching, expert modelling and carefully sequenced practice, enabling them to become increasingly fluent, confident and independent. A regular cycle of assessment and review ensures that progress is monitored closely and teaching remains responsive. Pilot schools reported positive improvements in pupils' confidence, self-esteem and independence as writers.

Learning outcomes

  • demonstrate improved handwriting fluency, spelling accuracy and sentence construction
  • use oral rehearsal, proofreading and self-monitoring to support independent writing
  • write with greater confidence, stamina and independence
  • transfer improved transcription skills to writing across the curriculum
