About this course

This course supports teaching assistants to develop effective scaffolding approaches that enhance learning and build independence in KS1 pupils. Participants will explore how to break down tasks, model thinking and use prompts, visuals and manipulatives to ensure pupils can access learning while maintaining appropriate challenge. The session focuses on metacognitive skills, helping pupils move from supported to independent work. TAs will learn how to fade support effectively, recognising when pupils are ready to take the next step and how to encourage ownership of their learning. Practical classroom strategies, real examples and simple routines will be shared to strengthen day‑to‑day practice. The course provides actionable techniques TAs can apply immediately to improve engagement, progress and independence in maths learning.
