About this course

The writing programme of study for Year 1 outlines the need for pupils to be taught, in the first instance, to compose sentences before writing to help secure the basic concept of a sentence. Many pupils enter and leave Year 1 not having secured this and need more time and experiences to embed this core, basic, but essential skill. NC2014 asks that pupils ‘master’ certain basic skills to enable them to be on a strong trajectory for the next part of their learning journey. This course focuses on those basic sentence structure and punctuation skills and dives into methods of teaching those aspects. Many pupils entering Year 2 will continue to need to learn how to secure the concept of a sentence before expanding their understanding of the wider range of different sentence forms and use of conjunctions and punctuation. It is important that any weakness in this knowledge is identified and addressed early on so that you can build upon firm foundations and secure stronger, more sustainable progress in writing. During the live remote session delegates will have an opportunity to explore the common barriers that their children experience, as well as consider a range of tried and tested techniques to improve sentence structure and punctuation. Video footage of ‘teaching in action’ is used within the training to help exemplify practice. You will also receive a two week writing unit which incorporates tried and tested techniques for addressing this issue. You can choose to use this at whole-class level or to target support for a small group of children. Brief session overview: Session 1: Prerecord to assure subject knowledge in sentence structure Session 2: Live webinar online which focuses on; knowing the key stage and year group expectations; recognising the potential barriers to learning and exploring tried and tested techniques aimed at supporting children to improve sentence structure and demarcation Session 3: Twilight session to share impact and further professional development with a focus on supporting our most vulnerable learners
