About the project

Harnessing our experience in closing achievement gaps for dysfluent readers, we invite schools to join the Year 1 Reading Fluency Project: Foundational Fluency. Many children progress through phonics yet still need support to build fluency or apply skills to longer texts. Some rely on sounding out, struggle to blend, or find comprehension hard. This project identifies these pupils early and provides strategies to bridge the gap between phonics proficiency and fluent reading. Impact from previous cohorts: • 47% no longer needed fluency instruction • 12% average increase in accuracy • 87% improved reading confidence • 91% passed the Phonics Screening Check. The project complements your SSP, using your own materials, and includes focused CPD, bespoke assessment tools, consultancy and support to embed school wide approaches, helping pupils move confidently towards fluent, motivated reading.

Learning outcomes

  • increase the % of Y1 children achieving expected standard in the phonics screening check
  • confidently implement the Year 1 Reading Fluency Project with fidelity
  • learn strategies to successfully support dysfluent readers
  • boost pupil progress beyond the initial project group
  • share approaches with colleagues to improve outcomes school wide

By the end of the Project, you’ll be empowered to ensure that these pupils are not only on a far improved trajectory to passing the Phonics Screening Check but also grow into volitional, confident, and fluent readers.

Key Features

With robust action planning, the project will support you in embedding sustainable strategies for reading instruction and improving fluency for year 1 and across your school. If we are able to tackle these foundational skills early on with our pupils, evidence suggests that later intervention will be less necessary.

By the end of the Project, you’ll be empowered to ensure that these pupils are not only on a far improved trajectory to passing the Phonics Screening Check but also grow into volitional, confident, and fluent readers.

  • 3 Focused CPD Sessions:
    Each session will provide practical, actionable strategies for identifying and supporting children who need a boost in fluency.
  • Bespoke, Fine-Tuned Assessment Materials:
    You’ll receive tailored tools to conduct error analysis and create targeted provision for individual pupils.
  • Individual 2-Hour Consultancy:
    You will receive bespoke, personalised support from a linked adviser, who will work with you to plan and review key actions based on your assessment data and the individual needs of your children.
