The Year 2 and 3 Reading Fluency Project is a research led intervention that accelerates progress for pupils working below the expected standard in reading. On average, participating pupils make 1 year 6 months’ progress in comprehension and an 11 month gain in accuracy (as measured by YARC). They also develop greater confidence, motivation and enjoyment in reading. Across an eight week programme, pupils take part in two 20 minute, teacher led sessions per week. Using expert modelled reading, echo reading and carefully chosen, appropriately challenging texts, pupils strengthen their reading fluency - accuracy, automaticity and prosody - leading to greater comprehension. Teachers benefit from high quality professional development that builds knowledge, deepens confidence and supports the sustainable use of fluency strategies, helping to raise outcomes for all pupils.
