This bundle includes a progression in working scientifically skills overview and our new working scientifically building blocks, which show how working scientifically skills begin in EYFS and progress through into Upper KS2.
The overview, giving a helpful table of key statements by area and age, showcases the small steps in learning pupils need to make in order to develop secure understanding of how to work scientifically and gain greater independence as they move through the curriculum.
The working scientifically building blocks represent the three skill areas shown in the overview table and represent how working scientifically skills progress through the phases. The building blocks can be used in a variety of ways to raise pupil’s awareness of what it means to work scientifically.
This document shows how the working scientifically statements from the science national curriculum for England build through the primary curriculum from EYFS to Year 6. The bold statements reflect the working scientifically skills outlined under the statutory requirements. The other bullet points provide additional guidance to support with understanding of progression. For EYFS, relevant Development Matters statements have been used to consider how the foundations for working scientifically can be encouraged and modelled through interactions with children while they are playing and exploring.
These building blocks summarise the working scientifically skills which pupils need to develop in each phase. They can be used to help pupils to self -assess the skills they are using in science lessons. These could be stuck in the front of pupils' books or used on a display to help aid discussion and increase the awareness of the skills that pupils need to develop in science.
