Each paper exemplifies progression from Foundation Stage to beyond year 6, providing detail and examples of grammar, vocabulary and punctuation at each year group, within the non-fiction text type to provide support and guidance for teachers when planning. The examples also clearly demonstrate how children might be expected to write at each stage. They are based on the 2006 National Strategy Progression Papers, but have been reviewed and rewritten to reflect the 2014 Curriculum, specifically taking account of the grammar Programmes of Study. The text-types detailed are: instructions, recount, explanation, discussion, non-chronological report and persuasion.
At the end of each document, there is a list of non-fiction and fiction books to inspire children’s writing as well as provide a contextualised model for writing. These Progression Papers complement the HfL Models for Writing which support teachers in modelling age appropriate writing for year groups from reception to Year 6.
