About this course

Speaking and listening skills are the foundation of children’s academic, social and emotional success. This CPD explores how to develop an engaging and progressive oracy curriculum where pupils learn to talk – and learn through talk – with confidence. Drawing on a range of aspects of oracy, the session offers practical strategies to embed spoken language within reading and writing, increase participation in discussion, and support pupils to collaborate thoughtfully across the curriculum. You will explore approaches that help children build vocabulary, think critically and speak competently for a range of purposes and audiences. The training highlights the importance of explicit spoken language provision, rich vocabulary teaching and varied opportunities for purposeful talk. Participants will be supported to evaluate current practice and identify clear next steps for strengthening oracy at both classroom and whole school level.

  • consider what a progressive primary oracy curriculum could include

  • explore pedagogy for developing oracy and its links to English

  • understand how dialogic teaching enhances reading, writing and wider learning

  • discover strategies to embed spoken language, vocabulary and drama across primary
