About this course

Leading a school is one of the most complex and demanding roles, and the transition from deputy headship to headship brings significant new responsibilities. The first year is often the most challenging, with increased accountability, rapid decision‑making and the potential for the role to feel isolating. This programme provides structured, practical support for colleagues taking up their first headship in Hertfordshire. Across a blend of in‑person and webinar sessions, participants explore key themes they are likely to encounter during their early leadership, including managing workload, evaluating their school's performance and understanding school finances. Through a series of full‑day and half‑day sessions, new headteachers gain essential guidance, access to expert advice and opportunities to build a supportive professional network.

  • gain confidence in leading the whole school community through change and challenge

  • develop practical strategies to balance competing leadership demands

  • create supportive networks that strengthen professional confidence and resilience
