About this course

Making Fluent and Flexible Calculators is a programme that supports pupils to develop their calcualtion skills, particulalry thier additive fluency. It strengthens pupils’ mental calculation by building secure base‑fact knowledge and combining this with flexible strategies for efficiency and accuracy. A key aim of the programme is to identify the mental calculation strategies currently used by your pupils. This information informs a personalised 12 week programme for your cohort. The programme CPD includes three live webinars: an initial 2‑hour session exploring the need for the intervention and the diagnostic assessments; a second 2‑hour session focusing on the teaching resources; and a final 1‑hour webinar offering a summary and celebration of the learning. The programme is fully resourced with diagnostic assessments, an online learning platform for ongoing CPD, comprehensive teaching guides and PowerPoints, scaffolded practice tasks, and progressive fluency slides.

  • identify current calculation strategies used by pupils

  • use diagnostic assessment to design a personalised teaching plan for pupils

  • apply a structured 12 week programme to develop calculation fluency

  • access resources and tools that support effective classroom delivery
