About this course

Effective formative assessment sits at the centre of responsive teaching, enabling teachers to understand pupils’ needs and tailor learning accordingly across the curriculum. In the 2025 Inspection Toolkit, Ofsted highlights the importance of checking understanding systematically, identifying misconceptions and adapting teaching to address them so pupils embed knowledge securely and build fluency. Responsive teaching supports vulnerable learners by reducing barriers to progress. This half-day in-person course explores practical strategies that help teachers assess pupils’ understanding within lessons, identify starting points and gaps, and adjust teaching in real time. Participants will consider a range of approaches to strengthen responsiveness and ensure assessment informs teaching effectively. Please note that this session will run in two locations so schools can select the one that best suits them.

  • understand the principles underpinning responsive teaching

  • explore strategies for assessing and supporting pupils’ understanding

  • understand the range of suitable adaptations to make in lessons
