About this course

Young carers are recognised as a vulnerable group (Ofsted Education Framework, 2025). Their caring responsibilities can impact on physical and mental health, attainment and academic performance.

Ofsted lists support for young carers under the 'Expected standard', making it essential for schools to identify and support them appropriately. Additionally, young carers repeatedly tell us that they want schools to understand their caring role and support them at school.

We know this is happening really well in some of our schools but is not yet consistent throughout: 48% of our schools reported to have no young carers in 2026 school census, despite a national estimation of there being at least 2 young carers in each classroom.

HCC and HFL are working together to help schools identify and support young carers in your schools. If you attended a HSCP webinar on young carers, it’s worth attending this one too, as it is focused on school census and Ofsted in relation to young carers.

  • understand the responsibilities to young carers, in line with the inspection framework

  • know how to record young carers within your systems and in the school census

  • start to think about how your school can identify and support young carers
