About this course

This course is considered mandatory for site management and caretaking staff where HCC is the duty holder.

This is an entry level course which would typically be part of the initial induction into the role at a school and provides an overview of health and safety requirements and HCC expectations in relation to the school premises with practical examples/tools for managing significant risks.

(Note: completion of this course does not ‘qualify’ individuals to carry out specific tasks such as working at height or undertake fire risk assessments – separate courses are run for these.)

The training aims to dispel some of the myths surrounding health and safety and promote a proportionate and sensible approach to safety in schools.

Subjects covered include: - working at height – COSHH (hazardous substances) - fire safety - manual handling - equipment use and servicing / inspection requirements - asbestos management.

Please note the afternoon session of this course incorporates the full content of the Management of Asbestos training course and thus attendees will be able to act as an asbestos authorising officer upon completion.

There is no need to book on the separate asbestos training course in addition.

  • understand their role in managing premises‑related health and safety duties

  • be aware of practical, day‑to‑day approaches to managing premises health and safety

  • gain awareness of key sources offering health and safety guidance and support

  • be able to apply a simple and effective approach to managing health and safety

  • be able to act as an asbestos authorising officer and complete permission to work

  • be signposted to HCC Grid resources that support effective premises H&S management
