About this course

Held at Elmhurst Primary School in Newham (UKLA Literacy School of the Year 2023), this training will support teachers and leaders to deepen their understanding of the latest evidence and research relating to the teaching of writing.

Written and co delivered by HFL adviser Ellen Counter and convenors of the UKLA’s international Teaching Writing research group and founders of the Writing for Pleasure Centre, Ross Young and Felicity Ferguson, the day will explore how schools can ensure all pupils make maximised progress in writing.

The essential features of effective writing teaching will be examined, including setting rigorous writing goals, planning class writing projects with the greater depth standard as the expectation, delivering high quality writing lessons, providing sentence level and grammar instruction, and making meaningful connections between reading and writing.

Participants will gain a secure understanding of what the research says about effective writing teaching, alongside practical strategies that can be applied immediately in the classroom, building confidence and subject knowledge in the teaching of writing.

  • gain a solid understanding of what the research says about effective writing teaching

  • gain practical ideas and strategies for writing teaching to use immediately in class

  • be equipped with greater confidence & subject knowledge concerning the teaching of writing
