About this course

Drawing on Ofsted’s expectation that “teachers assess pupils’ English language proficiency accurately and regularly,” this course is designed for secondary school staff with responsibility for English as an Additional Language (EAL) assessment. Through a combination of guided reflection and exploration of resources, participants will be introduced to a whole school approach that enables EAL assessment to be embedded effectively and consider how their current setting can further develop and refine EAL assessment to ensure it is both robust and manageable.

  • consider research and policy on EAL assessment and the implications for schools

  • explore whole‑school strategies to embed accurate, consistent EAL assessment

  • evaluate and strengthen robust EAL assessment to support learners effectively
