About this course

The benefit of being secure with multiplication facts extends beyond calculation to other curriculum domains such as fractions and measurement. But how can pupils develop both the recall of the facts, and secure their understanding of how multiplication works? This session will exemplify how pupils can move through the process of developing times tables fluency, from Explore & Learn > Rehearse > Recall > Assess & Apply. The session will consider how targeted, purposeful practice can support pupils build confidence in preparation for the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). Whilst the strategies are primarily suited to Year 3 and 4 pupils, they are equally valuable for pupils beginning to learn multiplication facts in Year 2 and for older pupils still securing multiplicative fluency in Year 5 and beyond. Maths subject leaders will also benefit from considering how these approaches can support a consistent, school wide strategy for teaching times tables.

  • consider how to support pupils to learn, rehearse and build recall of multiplication facts

  • understand how manipulatives, images and speaking frames can develop pupils’ understanding

  • explore the structures in multiplication that pupils need to understand to develop fluency

  • identify how ongoing assessment can identify next steps which support pupils to progress
