About this course

Reading comprehension sits at the heart of Key Stage 2 learning, and your teaching can have a transformative impact on how pupils make meaning from text (Reading Framework 2023). This professional development programme equips you with the tools and confidence to lead guided reading with greater precision and purpose. Led by internationally renowned expert Dr Wayne Tennent of Brunel University, the course blends research‑informed insights with practical, classroom‑ready strategies. Across a series of face‑to‑face sessions, you will explore how children think while reading, how effective questioning unlocks hidden comprehension processes, and how to scaffold purposeful talk to deepen understanding. You will experience modelled practice, strengthen formative assessment techniques, and gain guidance on selecting high‑value, engaging and diverse texts that stimulate rich discussion. This course is suitable for all KS2 teachers and leaders.

2 members of staff to attend per school. Either 2 x KS2 class teachers, or a Reading Lead and a KS2 teacher. This is a face-to-face modular programme. Delegates attend all sessions and form a community of learners throughout the programme.
