With more than one in five learners speaking English as an Additional Language (EAL), classrooms are increasingly multilingual. Using The Bell Foundation’s Language for Results resources, this Big Staff Meeting introduces staff to the principles of language acquisition and explores how effective assessment can support EAL learners’ progress. Grounded in Ofsted’s expectation that “teachers assess pupils’ English language proficiency accurately and regularly,” this practical session will provide realistic and manageable approaches to EAL assessment for busy school settings. By joining this session, all staff will develop their knowledge of effective EAL assessment practice, consider how they will plan and support EAL pupils to access the primary curriculum - setting them up to achieve and thrive. Suitable for all school staff working with EAL pupils.
