About this course

Foundational knowledge often refers to the core building blocks of knowledge and skills for a subject. But what does this look like in practice, and how can we identify it? Join us for this online staff meeting where we will explore the fundamental knowledge across the wider curriculum and how we can prioritise these essential components. We will distinguish between bedrock foundational knowledge, the universal physical and cognitive prerequisites like motor control and oracy and threshold concepts, the subject-specific anchors that provide a base for future learning. We will investigate how subjects like art, DT, and PE act as constructors of this bedrock, while others like history and geography provide the context for its application. Participants will develop subject knowledge and gain practical strategies to audit units of work, ensuring that learning is focused on the core, fundamental learning.

  • explore how different subjects build and provide the context for foundational knowledge

  • clearly identify subject-specific threshold concepts of a subject

  • investigate how we might secure automaticity of foundational knowledge

  • investigate practical strategies for auditing units of work

  • explore how progression mapping can help
