About this course

Designed for mainstream schools, this two-day course combines online and in-person sessions, balancing preventative theory with the safe and effective use of non-restrictive and limited restrictive interventions based on audited need. In response to Every Child Achieving and Thriving and DfE guidance on restrictive interventions, including the use of reasonable force, the course supports senior leaders to manage exceptional short-term needs. It provides theoretical understanding and practical strategies typically associated with special school provision. Participants will explore approaches that promote safe, proportionate responses while strengthening inclusive practice. The programme enables leaders to develop systems and considerations required to systematically reduce and, where possible, eliminate the use of restrictive interventions. For schools and settings with tutors already trained in Therapeutic Thinking Relational Practices.

  • understand preventative approaches to reduce need for restrictive interventions

  • apply safe and proportionate use of non restrictive and restrictive strategies

  • evaluate school practice against DfE guidance and the law on restrictive interventions

  • develop systems to audit need and reduce reliance on restrictive approaches

  • lead inclusive practice that supports safety, wellbeing and positive behaviour
