About this course

With the publication of DfE guidance on restrictive interventions, including the use of reasonable force in schools, it is increasingly important for staff to understand proactive, non-restrictive techniques. This one-day course focuses on approaches such as safe touch, guiding and escorting, enabling staff to support pupils effectively without the use of force wherever possible. Participants will explore the implications of using force and the expectations around its lawful and proportionate use. The course emphasises the role of planned, proactive non-restrictive intervention in reducing the impact of detrimental behaviours and minimising the need for restrictive practices, which are now subject to statutory recording and reporting. Designed for schools and settings with tutors already trained in Therapeutic Thinking Relational Practices, the training strengthens confidence in applying consistent, safe and relational approaches in practice.

  • understand proactive non restrictive techniques including safetouch, guiding &escorting

  • apply approaches that support pupils effectively without use of force where possible

  • explain implications of using force and requirements for lawful proportionate use

  • recognise how planned intervention reduces behaviours and need for restriction

  • • embed relational practice aligned to therapeutic thinking across the setting
