Developing effective mathematics subject leadership (DEMSL)

This updated four-day course for mathematics subject leaders focuses on developing the skills of leadership to ensure that the leader drives improvement and positively impacts on learning and outcomes in their school. Participants will develop their capacity to evaluate teaching and learning, using a range of evidence to identify, target and prioritise actions.

Leaders may either be new to the role or looking to hone their skills in leading maths across the school, increasing their impact and articulating their leadership contribution. With the four course days spread over the academic year, delegates will gain an in-depth understanding of the expectations of core subject leadership and will be guided through a typical yearly monitoring and evaluation cycle.

In addition, there will be a spotlight on pedagogy and each of the aims of the National Curriculum for mathematics: fluency, reasoning and problem solving. This will enable leaders to deepen subject-specific knowledge and understanding in order to lead and support colleagues in their school.


The course is highly interactive and includes school-based gap tasks throughout the year. This will help leaders to consolidate the activities and reflections undertaken during the training to embed the tools and process into everyday practice.

Learning outcomes

• explore the role of mathematics subject leader, including impacting on teaching, learning and outcomes
• discuss how to proactively drive progress and improvements in mathematics
• consider how to embed systems, develop consistency and to manage the challenges of leadership
• consolidate learning through a variety of school-based gap tasks that deepen understanding of subject-specific content and explore strategies for promoting the aims of the maths curriculum across the school
• articulate impact on teaching, learning and outcomes, as a result of focused actions, monitoring and support for colleagues
