Antiracism training: How to lead with confidence 2024

Delegates will participate in a 3-part programme (2 training days and a 1:1 consultancy session) underpinned by the HFL Education Antiracism Self-Evaluation Toolkit.

Day 1: Leaders will be empowered to understand a whole-school approach to antiracism and how to address it in each of the following:

  • leadership – ethos and values
  • curriculum and resourcing
  • recruitment, retention and development
  • stakeholder feedback

Leaders will develop key skills to support and train their colleagues to understand:

  • what racism is
  • impact of racialised language
  • how to become racially literate
  • structural and institutional racism
  • strategies for addressing pushback and challenge

Consultancy session: Each school will receive a tailored online consultancy session with a race equality adviser to support school progress with the self-evaluation toolkit.

Day 2: Race equality advisers will provide responsive input on specialist areas. Delegates will participate in a peer-to-peer review to explore their progress, strategies and impact. 

Learning outcomes

By the end of the training, delegates will:

  • have become more self-aware; developing an antiracist lens and approach
  • have developed knowledge and understanding about racial inequality in Britain
  • understand key areas for concern related to race and racism, and understand the action required in schools/settings
  • feel confident about a strategic approach to creating an antiracist school/setting and be prepared to lead and challenge their colleagues
  • be knowledgeable about resources to support, review and develop in school which will embed antiracism and race equity
