Teacher Encounters: Inspiring young people for a career in STEM

Venue: Hertfordshire Development Centre

About this course:

With contribution from several local employers our Industry Insights in STEM event will allow teachers the opportunity to engage with employers, understand the breadth of opportunity STEM pathways offer and help bridge the gap between industry and education.

The event will include a presentation from Kevin Gilmartin, Post-16 specialist, Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), who will give teachers information on the changing post-16 landscape, and the importance of supporting careers in the curriculum. The Hertfordshire LEP, Careers and Enterprise company and Unifrog will share insights in local labour market information and the future career opportunities for young people in the county.

Participating teachers and careers leaders will be given practical advice on how to prepare students for a variety of careers in the STEM field and can take part in an array of informative workshops covering the application and selection process, and assessment and interview processes for pathways.

Our Industry Insights programme is an exciting element of teacher Continuing Professional Development, providing opportunities for teaching staff and careers leaders to spend time with and learn from people in various sectors and industries. Our events are designed to help teachers fully understand current industry practice, improve their understanding of the range of jobs and routes into the workplace of today, and to help bring this insight into how they teach their subjects.

Learning outcomes:

Additional information:

Many employers experience difficulties recruiting staff with skills across a range of industries, especially under-represented groups such as women, ethnic minority groups and those with additional support needs. Our strong partnerships with schools and employers ensure that we have the right mix of educational and industry expertise to make our careers events effective.

To ensure there is representation from your school/trust at our Industry Insights events, please forward this information to your subject teachers. Your careers leader will also receive this information via their contacts from the Careers Hub, so you can ensure there is the right representation from your school at each event.
