Language Matters

ABOUT THIS COURSE

The overarching purpose of this course is to support professionals working with young people in schools, settings and trusts to feel more confident about their use of racialised language.

This training is a self-paced elearning course to support colleagues in recognising that racial language is impactful and can have significant effects, but that this can be navigated with appropriate knowledge and information.  

This is an introductory course with the key aims to educate school leaders, teaching staff, and support staff about:

  • racialised language
  • race and ethnicity inclusive and non-inclusive terms 
  • connotations and origins of specific racialised terms  

This course provides articles, case studies, brief assessments and quizzes, as well as a comprehensive toolkit on completion, to support lifelong learning which will help colleagues avoid making stereotypical and racial comments.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. Participants will increase their knowledge and understanding of racialised terms.
  2. Participants will feel more confident about using racialised language and be more aware of the potential connotations and impact.
  3. Participants will be better resourced and able to further develop their knowledge about race, ethnicity and language independently.
