Winning at writing: raising writing standards in year 4 & 5

About this course

This innovative and sharply focused programme of study is designed to support children in Years 4 and 5 to meet age-related expectations and beyond in writing.

This project focuses intensively on developing teacher subject knowledge to explicitly teach writing through sharing pedagogical approaches for teaching precise and effective composition.  Devised using evidence-based research into effective writing teaching, this project will show teachers how explicitly teach the stages of the writing process, with clear strategies for each stage, alongside a keen focus on writing for authentic purpose and audience. Teachers will develop awareness of how to employ model texts to teach the impact of children’s word and phrase choice, sentence structure and overall composition.

Drawing upon our highly successful project design in reading fluency, the approaches and resources are designed to develop writing fluidity, stamina, and confidence. Teachers will be provided with three sequences of lessons. These sequences include more than twenty detailed lessons with a range of resources and a variety of innovative approaches to support focus children with the skills and confidence required for high-quality writing.  Through these sequences and the live webinars, teachers will gain a heightened awareness and deepen their subject knowledge of how to explicitly teach each stage of the writing process and scaffold children to write effectively.

The lessons are designed to be delivered as whole class teaching or used for targeted support.

The EEF’s mechanisms for effective implementation of CPD have been drawn upon in creation of this highly successful programme. Teachers will be supported throughout to ensure that they have confidence and secure subject knowledge to enable the children’s writing to flourish.
