Practical ways to assess, scaffold and secure maths learning in your KS1 classroom; applying Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction

About this course:

Have you noticed some pupils find it difficult to apply the teaching when working independently?

Have you noticed that some pupils have arithmetic proficiency but cannot make connections in order to solve problems?

This course, underpinned by Rosenshine’s principles, will provide practical strategies to develop pupils’ independence. The importance of small steps through key learning and effective questioning will be explored using a range of scaffolding ideas. These will support you to notice and respond in the moment  when learning is not secure yet.

We will explore a range of mathematical domains and provide structures that will enable you to teach your class a small step approach to problem solving. This will provide pupils with a toolkit to feel empowered to apply their learning to the unfamiliar.

Learning outcomes:

  • know what learning to check and how to check it;
  • know and identify pupils’ common misconceptions and errors and how to respond and adapt teaching;
  • have a better understanding of simple and effective differentiation through questioning, scaffolding, practice and challenge.
