Essentials for safe staffing for the designated safeguarding person (DSP)

About this course

This course provides information relating to staffing for the lead person for safeguarding within the setting, including ensuring the right staff are recruited, allegations against staff are managed and staff are supervised effectively, to help keep children safe. It is expected that the lead safeguarding person has experience of managing staff and has accessed basic child protection training prior to attending this course.

This course is suitable for practitioners working in Early Years settings and childminders who employ an assistant(s).

Learning outcomes

The aims of this course are to: 

  • recognise the role and responsibilities of the designated lead safeguarding person for safe staffing
  • develop knowledge of safe recruitment practices, ensuring compliance with Ofsted registration requirements
  • understand how to manage allegations made against staff, including referral process to the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO)
  • increase knowledge of online safety and share key messages with staff and parents
  • ensure safe staffing practice embedded including staff supervision
