Assessing learning in primary science

About this course

How might we assess pupil’s learning in primary Science? What are we looking for? When and how should we look for it?

This course aims to bring together both curriculum design and assessment strategies with a focus on assessing learning in primary science.

The course will begin by considering progression in the science curriculum in both the substantive knowledge and disciplinary knowledge to work scientifically We will use this thinking to inform what we assess and how we might assess learning in primary science.

We will explore key principles of formative assessment including thinking about methods of assessment for those with barriers to learning. 

Examples of pupil outcome will be shared so that schools can consider how this might look within their own setting. 

This course is ideal for subject leaders and senior/curriculum leaders.

Learning outcomes

  • facilitate subject leaders and senior leaders in considering the purpose, sequencing, and milestones within the primary science curriculum
  • review guidance on assessment in science from the EEF Improving Primary Science report and the Teacher Assessment in Primary Science project
  • consider formative assessment tools that enable teachers to be responsive in the classroom, ensuring learning builds over time, towards the milestones
