KS2 spotlight on phonics and spelling

About this course:

Phonics and spelling are some children’s biggest barriers to reading and writing with fluency, often affecting those who are disadvantaged, have SEND or working memory / attention issues. Research shows that automaticity in phonics and spelling opens doors to comprehension, composition and the wider curriculum.

Teachers! Join our highly experienced expert trainers, who will support you to unpick the issues that older readers and writers face, consider how best to meet those needs as part of high-quality teaching, and provide you with practical classroom ideas, strategies and resources to close those gaps. Grounded in the latest research, this inspiring, energising course will support you in moving forward the teaching, assessing and application of spelling and phonics for all pupils at KS2. During the session you will explore how phonics underpins the teaching of all spelling and how to “reinforce pupils’ word reading and transcription skills in key stage 2 reading and English lessons”. (Ofsted’s English Subject Report, March 2024).

No matter what phonics scheme your school is using, this course will benefit your class teaching and enhance subject knowledge. You will leave the course with a range of activities and strategies to use with the whole class to ensure all children make progress in this area. Your school will benefit from a consistent, well-informed approach, based on current theories and practice and that builds on the work of your KS1 colleagues.

Learning Outcomes:
