HFL Education's highly impactful Reading Fluency Project for Year 1 teachers and pupils.

Harnessing our extensive experience in closing achievement gaps for dysfluent readers, we are delighted to invite schools to join us for our Year 1 Reading Fluency Project: Foundational Fluency.

We recognise from our experience in supporting schools, that many children seem to progress in their systematic phonics programme but need additional support to become fluent and confident readers and to reach competency in time for their phonics screening check.

Some children may appear to read single words accurately but struggle with reading comprehension, stamina, or applying known phonics skills to longer texts. There may be an overreliance on sounding out, or a lack of confidence with blending. These children may need extra guidance to bridge the gap between phonics proficiency and reading fluency.

Our Year 1 Reading Fluency Project is designed to help you identify these children early and implement targeted strategies to boost their reading achievement. The project will not detract from your school’s current Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) programme but instead, complement it. You will be using your own SSP materials and assessment data, ensuring full fidelity to your established practices.

Key Features of the Project:

3 Focused CPD Sessions: Each session will provide practical, actionable strategies for identifying and supporting children who need a boost in fluency.

Bespoke, Fine-Tuned Assessment Materials: You’ll receive tailored tools to conduct error analysis and create targeted provision for individual pupils.

Individual 2-Hour Consultancy Visit: You will receive bespoke, personalised support from a linked adviser, who will work with you to plan and review key actions based on your assessment data and the individual needs of your children.

Sustainable, School-Wide Improvement: With robust action planning, the project will support you in embedding sustainable strategies for reading instruction and improving fluency for year 1 and across your school. If we are able to tackle these foundational skills early on with our pupils, evidence suggests that later intervention will be less necessary. 

By the end of the Project, you’ll be empowered to ensure that these pupils are not only on a far improved trajectory to passing the Phonics Screening Check but also grow into volitional, confident, and fluent readers.

The project is comprised of multiple CPD sessions:

Project launch on 16th September 2025, 09:00-15:00, over three sessions:

  • Session 1: 09:00-11:00 - live webinar and self-paced eLearning module
  • Session 2: 11:00-12:30 - live webinar
  • Session 3: 13:30 - 15:00 - live webinar

Twilight session on 7th October 2025,  3.00pm-5.00pm (delivered as a 2-hour live webinar)

Early-project, paired, remote consultancy meeting (two hours)

Final review on 15th December 2025, 3.00pm-5.00pm (delivered as a 2-hour live webinar)

Please note: Live sessions are recorded and will be available to access for one week after delivery.

The project cost covers the inclusion of two teachers (who will deliver the sessions) and a project lead (this may be the English / Reading / Phonics subject leader).

Learning Outcomes

  • Teachers and leads will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to implement the project successfully to support those dysfluent pupils.   

  • Teachers and leads will be able to share this learning with colleagues to ensure that improved progress is secured for more pupils beyond the initial project pupil group
