The Big Staff Meeting Series 2025-26 - History

- Progression in history through key concepts and themes (e.g. cause and consequence, monarchy)

Join us for an engaging staff meeting on ‘Progression in History Through Key Concepts and Themes’, where we will explore practical strategies to ensure a cohesive and enriched history curriculum.

This session will focus on how to build clear progression in pupils' understanding of historical concepts such as cause and consequence, power and trade as significant themes which repeat and build over time, across year groups. Together, we'll uncover ways to deepen historical thinking, link learning across topics, and inspire curiosity about the past, equipping teachers with tools to make history meaningful and memorable for all learners.

Learning outcomes

  • Deepen knowledge of historical concepts like cause and consequence, significance, power, monarchy and trade, and learn how to apply these effectively in teaching
  • Gain practical strategies to structure history lessons around clear progression in key concepts and themes, ensuring continuity across year groups
  • Deepen understanding of how children make progress in history across the primary school
