About this course
This 2-part webinar series will fully support geography subject leaders in all aspects of their role. Part 1 will support geography subject leaders with ensuring that their curriculum is well-sequenced and meets the needs of the school’s context. Focusing on mapping and identifying concepts that underpin and link learning across units of work and exploring how oracy and vocabulary can be developed in geography to support learning;
Part 1 will aid geography subject leaders in developing, refining or deepening their understanding of their existing scheme of work.
Part 2 will explore effective teaching strategies and methodologies in primary geography. The focus will be on the enquiry process and developing children’s geographical skills and competency in fieldwork. Key themes such as using the school grounds effectively and ensuring progression in mapwork will be explored. The role of the geography subject leader will be discussed and creating an action plan, monitoring learning and assessment of geography will be explored and exemplified. As well as being a forum for discussion, sharing good practice and exploring curriculum design approaches, we will also cover key documents such as the Ofsted subject report and subject insight video and share relevant blogs. Delegates will be able to use the content to support teachers within their own school. For delegates who are not able to attend the live webinars, a recording will be available shortly afterwards, along with the supporting materials. The 2-part webinar series is £109.35 per delegate.
Learning outcomes
• Explore what might be included when geography curriculum mapping to ensure that there is logical sequencing and progression in learning across the school
• Explore key geographical concepts and investigate how these can be identified and woven through the curriculum to create progression
• Ensure that the curriculum meets the needs of your school community and how we might adapt an existing scheme to create bespoke opportunities relevant to the school’s context and locality
• Explore the enquiry process and consider how children will make progress in geographical skills and fieldwork
• Explore strategies for effective teaching of vocabulary and how oracy skills can be developed and used to secure understanding in geography
• Explore strategies for monitoring geography across the school to improve learning
• Consider assessment strategies for geography and how we might monitor achievement in geography across the school
