About this project
The KS4 Reading Fluency Project is designed to swiftly improve reading fluency and comprehension of those students who are working below the expected standard in reading. The project strategies, which have been trialled extensively at KS4, have had a powerful effect on reading ability for the vast majority of students, in turn supporting them to develop more positive views about reading. This project seeks to establish best practice development of Reading Fluency support in KS4.
Over the eight-week period, target students in KS4 receive two 25/30 minutes teacher-led sessions each week. Using the key strategies of modelled expert reading and echo reading, alongside engaging text selection, students in KS4 have been shown to make dramatic progress across an eight-week intervention period. At KS4, students made on average 2 years and 8 months progress during the intervention period and have a more positive relationship with reading; are more enthusiastic, confident readers with an increased understanding and engagement with texts.
This project incorporates a range of high-quality CPD elements, including:
- Reading Fluency Online Training Day, Thursday 16th April 2026, incorporating three sessions: Session 1 is independent time from 9 -11am to read and view pre-recorded content – available to be accessed from induction day onwards Sessions 2 and 3 will be delivered as live webinars: Live from 11am-3pm

- Please note: Live sessions are recorded and will be available to access for a limited time after delivery. The project cost covers the inclusion of two teachers (one or both will deliver the sessions) and a project lead (this may be the English subject leader or link SLT).
For KS4, we recommend schools purchase the SECONDARY YARC pack Age 11-16 (order direct from GL Assessment) but this is not mandatory – KS4 schools may choose to use a different form of data pre and post collection.
