The KS3 Reading Fluency Project is designed to swiftly improve reading fluency and comprehension of those students who are working below the expected standard in reading. The project strategies, which have been trialled extensively at KS3, have had a powerful effect on reading ability for the vast majority of students, in turn supporting them to develop more positive views about reading. This project seeks to establish best practice development of Reading Fluency support in KS3.
Over the eight-week period, target students in KS3 receive two 25/30 minutes teacher-led sessions each week. Using the key strategies of modelled expert reading and echo reading, alongside engaging text selection, students in KS3 have been shown to make dramatic progress across an eight-week intervention period. At KS3, students made on average 22 months progress during the intervention period and have a more positive relationship with reading; are more enthusiastic, confident readers with an increased understanding and engagement with texts.
