About this course

This course provides information relating to staffing for the designated safeguarding lead (DSL) within the early years setting, including building a safe organisational culture, safe recruitment and how to effectively manage and monitor allegations against staff.

This session will help you to understand how to liaise with the Hertfordshire statutory children's services agencies and with the local safeguarding partners, including the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) and the Hertfordshire Prevent Manager. It is expected that the designated safeguarding lead has accessed safeguarding and child protection in early years training prior to attending this course.

Learning outcomes

  • recognise the role and responsibilities of the designated safeguarding lead (DSL) for safe staffing
  • how to build a safe organisational culture in your setting
  • develop knowledge of safe recruitment and how to monitor ongoing suitability of staff, ensuring compliance with the EYFS
  • understand how to manage, monitor and refer allegations of abuse against other staff
  • feel confident in how the Hertfordshire Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) process works and what to expect when making a referral
  • how to liaise with other local statutory children's services agencies and with the local safeguarding partners to safeguard children
  • increase knowledge of online safety and share key messages with staff and parents

Additional information

This training is Part 2 of a 2-part course for the Early Years designated safeguarding lead. The Early Years designated safeguarding lead (DSL) Part 1 - child protection training should also be attended to meet the DSL training requirements set out in the EYFS. This early years DSL course is consistent with the criteria set out in Annex C (EYFS).
