About this course

This training for the designated safeguarding lead (DSL) will provide details of the Hertfordshire child protection procedures, including information on managing the referral process for child protection concerns, using the Hertfordshire continuum of need document, working with other professionals and contributing to child protection plans.

This course is suitable for practitioners working in Early Years settings, including childminders with assistants. The pre-course requirements are that participants have attended a basic child protection and safeguarding course within the past 2 years and have the role of designated safeguarding lead within their setting.

Suitable for new and experienced designated safeguarding leads.

Learning outcomes

This course supports you to:

  • understand your role and responsibilities as designated safeguarding lead for child protection
  • update your awareness of significant harm, indicators of abuse and awareness of additional risk factors to your families
  • develop and embed a positive safeguarding culture with your team and in your setting
  • understand the legislation and Hertfordshire procedures for reporting, referring and escalating child protection concerns, including your role in child protection conferences
  • be confident in using the Hertfordshire Continuum of Need document to provide Early Help, Intensive and Specialist Statutory Support
  • understanding your role in information sharing and multi-agency working
  • have an understanding of relevant legislation and guidance relating to safeguarding children
  • understand the process for reporting allegations made against staff
  • develop knowledge of Herts Safeguarding Children Partnership (HSCP) procedures and website support

Additional information

This training is Part 1 of a 2-part course for the Early Years designated safeguarding lead. The Early Years designated safeguarding lead (DSL) Part 2 - safe staffing and creating a positive safeguarding culture training should also be attended to meet the DSL training requirements set out in the EYFS. This early years DSL course is consistent with the criteria set out in Annex C (EYFS).
