About this course:
Schools are engaged in thinking deeply about their curriculum design, implementation and how they assess learning. This course aims to bring curriculum design and assessment of learning together with a focus on assessing learning across the curriculum in foundation subjects and science.
Assessment is a key part of understanding the impact of the planned curriculum and how it is implemented.
We will begin by considering the curriculum - how its purpose and the identified milestones guide us in what should be assessed, how and why.
We will explore key principles when structuring an approach to assessment that fits with your curriculum. There will be a focus on the critical importance of formative assessment tools to support this, as well as discussion around the role of summative assessment to ensure milestones are reached and learning is retained.
We will share examples of where this has been successful, so that schools can consider how this might look within their own setting.
Schools will choose which subject/s they focus on during the day. Schools should bring their curriculum map and any other relevant documents that track how learning in the subject builds across the school.
Learning outcomes:
- Facilitate school senior leaders and subject leaders in considering the purpose, sequencing and milestones within the curriculum of their chosen subject/s
- Consider formative assessment tools that enable teachers to be responsive in the classroom, ensuring learning builds over time, towards the milestones
- Explore the role of summative assessments in ensuring identified milestones are reached and learning is retained
- Share examples of where this work has been successful and consider what this might look like within other settings
- Offer tools so that similar thinking can be replicated back in school, focusing on other foundation subjects or science, that have not been the chosen focus of the day
Additional information:
Delegates should bring the current curriculum mapping or document/s that show what is taught in which year group for their chosen subject/s.
