Growing greater depth reading in Year 5 and 6 reading

About this course

This exceptional course will draw upon research in and out of the classroom, covering the essential knowledge and skills that underpin successful comprehension of texts both during and after the act of reading.  Practical activities and demonstrations will illustrate how to use whole class, group, and individual approaches during reading sessions.

Our specialist trainers will explore ways to develop pupils’  thinking at a deeper and more sustained level, as well as consider how to develop the clarity and precision of how children express and develop their thoughts. As referenced in the 2024 Ofsted subject report for English. 'Schools can build pupils' 'readiness' for future encounters with texts by introducing them to high-quality whole texts in different forms and genres'

During the session, reference will be made to statutory assessment domains. You will be supported to see how the principles and approaches of effective reading instruction will support progress and attainment under each of the relevant assessment criteria.  Reference to past papers will be used to highlight implications for test preparation and technique, without losing sight of the long-term, core aim of developing confident, thoughtful and articulate readers, able to cope with the demands of increasingly complex texts.

Delegates who previous attended this training said:

‘This is my first course with HFL and it was excellent! I found it extremely worthwhile!’

The most useful aspects of the training were ‘book recommendations, authentic questions, use ‘Tell me’ instead of ‘Why? Use of the 2023 SATs extract, the opportunity to do tasks and feed back’

If you are a Year 5 or 6 teacher, join us on the journey to growing greater depth readers.
